What is ANSI?

ANSI stands for the American National Standards Institute developed the BIFMA standard for evaluating safety, durability, and the structural adequacy of the specified furniture, independent of construction materials in the commercial furniture in the institutional and commercial industries. BIFMA is ANSI accredited to conforms to ANSI Essential Requirements, and therefore includes:

• materially affected and interested parties; 
• broad-based public review;
• consideration of and response to comments submitted; and
• incorporation of approved changes into a draft standard;

BIFMA in its involvement needs to be administered along with ISO Technical Committee TC-136 Furniture the International Standards for office furniture. However, ISO TC-136 covers ALL furniture, not just office furniture.

 

-Healthcare Furniture

The University of Michigan, January 2015 overviewed BIFMA Healthcare Furniture Cleaning Guide. BIFMA and Mississippi State University partnered for creating large occupants to create seating commercial products.
