Importance of Organic Certification

Earlier there is a long history of organically grown food products. Today, as consumers become more aware and responsible about what they eat and drink, there is an increasing interest in organic products by swimming away the wave of synthetic chemical and fertilizers use, and consequently a rising demand for, organic products.

The organic process of farming is environmentally conscious. It promotes greater soil fertility by rotating crops and using natural materials and methods of cultivation of the crop, such as compost, manure, and cover crops, etc. These practices help to control soil erosion and manage soil nutrients required for the growth of crops. Healthy soil also can absorb more carbon from the air which leads to the growth of healthy crops.

Organic agriculture is a sustainable form of agriculture, suitable for both ecological and economic reasons for the country. Sri Lanka has been at the forefront in organic agricultural exports ranging from spices, essential oils, and herbs to rubber in recent years. The industry is well equipped to supply the need for organic products to the global market.
