There are a variety of goods and products in the market, and every day some new ones are being produced and added to the list. This makes it challenging for the user or the buyer to select worth using and which to avoid among them. Hence, to give credibility to the genuine products, the Bureau of Indian Standard has been established. This makes people aware of the unsafe ones, by ISI marking the genuine and safe to use products.
The
ISI (Indian Standards Institution) mark is a standard compliance mark that is
used for industrial items sold in India. items sold in India. It assures that
the product which you are buying is in compliance with all the quality and
safety standards and is safe for customers to use. The ISI mark is granted to a
product to check the product quality and its impacts on the population on a
specified scale.
Products
having an ISI mark means that it adheres to the Indian Standards. This IS: XXXX
and (CM/L-xxxxxxx) ISI or Indian Standard Institute has a seven-digit number
label is created by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a government
authority for accountability for standardizing of items or products sold in the
Indian market. Without CM/L number for ISI marks, items or products cannot be
sold. A failure or misuse of ISI Mark on goods in India is punishable with the
penalty.
BIS
laid down the guidelines for Grant of License (‘GoL’) for an ISI mark on April
29, 2019. BIS grants a license only based on the successful assessment of the
product to the relevant standard(s). It can also be established through testing
in the manufacturing premises or third-party laboratory testing or a
combination of both.

Needed to acquire ISI Marking
Like
any application of the standard, ISI Marking Certification too requires
mandatory documents to process for ISI registration and license.
- Certification
of Incorporation to identify your legal identity
- In case
of a partnership firm, partnership deed
- Authority
letter duly signed for application of ISI Marking
- Certification
of Address Proof
- An
Affidavit Format A/B from Indian Representative(in case of Foreign
Manufacturer)
- An
Affidavit Format C from Indian Manufacturer
- Details
of Machines used to produce the product
- Nature
of packaging and storage facility required
- Details
of test equipment for conducting test
- Details
of Quality Control
- Verification
and self-evaluation reports of product testing
- Certified
copy of independent test reports of the particular product received from
BIS tested in approved laboratories.
- Concerned
regulatory agency’s certificate such as Chief controller of Explosives
(CCE), Central Insecticide Board (CIB), drug controller,
- SSI
certificate is also to be attached if the company is a small scale
- Indemnity
bond or undertaking on Non-judicial Rs 100 stamp-paper for blocking the
number.
The
ISI mark is compulsory for certifying items to be sold in India. The majority
of products covered under the scheme for mandatory ISI Certification are
Cement, steel & products, heaters, electric motors, food & related
products, kitchen appliances, household electrical goods, LPG cylinders,
medical equipment, tyre & tubes, chemical & fertilizers, wiring cables,
LPG valves switches, LPG cylinders, Portland cement, automotive tyres and so
on.
Bureau
of Indian Standards issue a license based on the self-assessment by Bureau
officer of the manufacturing infrastructure of an organization, production
process followed to produce the product, ensure quality of the product need to
be ISI marked and testing capabilities of a manufacturer through a visit to its
manufacturing premises.
